Residents of Yewtree Road in Plumley have been handed £250 after their MP placed a charity bet on the Aintree Grand National.

Dozens of MPs took up the offer of a free £50 charity bet on the world-famous steeplechase, funded by the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) as part of its Grand National Charity Bet Campaign which raises money for good causes up and down the country.

Tatton MP Esther McVey placed her bet at Ladbrokes shop in Wilmslow Road, Handforth, splitting her chances between Jagwar and Iroko – both of which are trained by Cheshire trainer Oliver Greenall.

Esther’s horses didn’t win but the BGC still gives £250 to each MP taking part to donate to their local area.

This year Esther chose Yewtree Ratepayers’ Association, who needed some new tools to maintain the shared space outside the properties.

Esther said: “I am delighted the money is being put to good use and will benefit so many residents. It is a beautiful space of grassland and woodland and it was lovely to be able to visit and hand over the cheque.”
