Treasury ministers will meet with Tatton MP Esther McVey to discuss school funding across Cheshire.

The meeting was secured during an exchange in Parliament where Ms McVey demanded more cash for local schools.

Speaking in Treasury Questions Ms McVey said: “Will the Chancellor ensure that more money is provided for school across the country, which desperately need it, and in particular Cheshire where it is the lowest funded.”

Ms McVey wants more money promised to schools at next week’s spring statement.

Chief Secretary to the Treasury Liz Truss: “One of the things we have done in response to this is introduce a national funding formula to make sure school funding is more fair across the country and getting fairer every year but I would be delighted to meet her.”

The call comes after Ms McVey secured a Commons’ debate on funding in Cheshire schools where she told Schools Minister Nick Gibb how spending outstrips funding in both council areas. Primary schools across Cheshire are 44 per cent less funded than London schools and secondary schools 49 per cent less funded.

Ms McVey added: “We have the spending review next week and I want to see action on this. Education is a key building block to social mobility and every child deserves the very best. I am delighted Liz Truss has suggested a meeting and I look forward to setting out my concerns to her and seeing what she proposes so I can reassure teachers and governors.”
