A relief road for Knutsford is vital to ease current congestion problems ahead of new homes being built and adding to that issue, an MP has told Government.

Tatton MP Esther McVey met with Roads Minister Jesse Norman setting out how a road linking Manchester Road to Northwich Road bypassing the heavily congested Canute

roundabout, in the town centre, was needed.

She said: “The traffic is already heavily clogged on our roads and it is not uncommon for drivers to be at the roundabout for ten minutes each day in non peak times. It will inevitably get worse with a growing population so the measures to deal with it need to be in place before the houses go up.

“I explained to Jesse that a Knutsford Relief Road was vital to meet the needs of our towns and villages as it stood, and even more so with the proposed housing for the area. I will keep pressing the issue with the Department for Transport and the Treasury as it is so important.”

The road would bypass the centre of Knutsford and alleviate the need for everything to passthrough the roundabout in the centre of town. Studies have shown the point to be a congestion hub with excessive carbon emissions from the large number of vehicles.

Local residents have said a relief road is on their wish list to improve transport problems in

the middle of Knutsford.

Ms McVey said: “I will be speaking with transport officials and Highways England to see if the scheme can be costed and set out the arguments for the road.”
