Numbers of people claiming out of work benefits in Tatton has fallen again in the past month – as national unemployment levels hit a 43 year low.
According to the Office of National Statistics 420 people were looking for work in July down from 440 the previous month.
It means 0.8 per cent of people across the parliamentary constituency of Tatton are out of work compared to 2.8 per cent in the North West.
Of the 75 North West Parliamentary constituencies only Cumbria’s Westmorland and Lonsdale has a lower rate of unemployment at 0.5 per cent.
Tatton MP Esther McVey said: “Improving our infrastructure and transport links so we attract more businesses to the area is vital and will help us build on our existing work base. I am delighted numbers of people claiming out of work benefits is continuing to fall in the area but I know there is more to be done to ensure Tatton keeps thriving and there are jobs for people looking for work and also future generations.
“That is why in my role as Secretary of State for the Department for Work and Pensions I am determined to create more jobs and make it easier for people to find work. No one should be better off on benefits and that is why this Government has changed the benefit system to make work pay.
“Getting a job means securing an income and the chance to build a career. That’s why up and down the country we are doing all we can to help people into work.”
Between January to March 2018 and April to June 2018 numbers of people in work increased and numbers of unemployed decreased.
There are currently 32.4 million people in work – an increase of 313,000 from the April to June 2017 figures.
Unemployment nationally has not been lower since February 1975. Youth unemployment in the three month period to June was 11.3 per cent for 16 to 24 year olds, the lowest since comparable records for the age group began in 1992. Jobs being advertised on the DWP find a job site show there are 3,770 jobs available across Cheshire, including 97 in Knutsford, 94 in Wilmslow, 37 in Middlewich and 24 in Alderley Edge.
