Esther McVey MP writes in the Knutsford Guardian accusing Labour of dismantling national security

Esther's column in Knutsford Guardian

Last week will go down in history as “surrender week” because that was when Labour voted to weaken our nation and dismantle our country’s national security.

Labour voted to allow the Chinese mega Embassy to go ahead in London, voted to support the Chagos handover to Mauritius, an ally of China, at a cost of £35 billion to the UK taxpayers and voted for the awful Northern Ireland troubles Bill, which will re-open the door for criminal prosecutions to our veterans. This will affect recruitment and our ability to keep our country safe as men and women will not want to sign up to serve their country knowing they too could be abandoned in the future as Labour are abandoning our veterans now.

Britain has long had an on off relationship with China, and while we want to trade with them, we do not want them to have a hold over our strategic infrastructure and that is precisely what will happen with this super embassy.

Its location is next to the capital’s financial district with fibre optic cables that carry huge quantities of highly sensitive financial data and personal emails, leading to concerns that the Chinese will tap into the system and intercept the information.

And we have reason to be concerned.

We know China is a threat, its record on espionage in the UK, including hacks on the Electoral Commission, Foreign Office and MPs’ computers, as well as sanctioning MPs, speaks for itself.

Even MI5 have said they “can't eliminate each and every potential risk” yet Labour thinks it can “mitigate” any risks.

This is an obvious threat to our national security and yet Keir Starmer is allowing them to have this huge foothold in the heart of London.

In fact, when Starmer took office, one of the first phone calls he made was to President Xi who made it clear the Chinese super embassy was a crucial part of UK and Chinese relations.

Why is Labour kowtowing to China? The only explanation it seems is government has become desperate for China’s money. Labour has crashed the economy – new figures show borrowing is at record level for two years in a row (outside of the pandemic) and national debt is through the roof – Rachel Reeves is dismantling our economy and now Labour is desperate to find money from places like China with no thought for national security.

The first rule of government is to protect its citizens, and this government is certainly not doing that.
