Esther McVey has praised the work and dedication of Cheshire Constabulary’s Chief Constable Mark Roberts – as he retires after 33 years of service.
Ms McVey said the county was lucky to have such great leadership and he would be sorely missed.
Speaking in Parliament during Home Office Question time she said: “Cheshire Constabulary was named the best police force in England and Wales for the highest charge rates for crimes against women and girls, specifically sexual offences, violence against the person, stalking, and harassment.
“The Chief Constable under whose leadership this has happened is retiring next week, so will the minister join with me and fellow Cheshire MPs in congratulating him for his life of service.”
Ms McVey added: “And is she, like me, surprised the Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire (Dan Price) did not seek to extend his tenure when he offered to remain in service.”
According to His Majesty Inspectorate of Constabularies Cheshire Constabulary is currently one of the best performing in the country. It has been reported that Chief Con Roberts had hoped to negotiate an extension to his contract which would have seen him remain at the helm until 2028. But the extension was not granted by Cheshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Dan Price.
Home Office Minister Satvir Kaur replied: “I would like to extend my congratulations on that dedication of service and join other Cheshire MPs in congratulating Cheshire Police force.”
